The Last Dragon was actually a film produced by Motown Records back in the eighties. It seems that one of the primary concerns of the film might actually have been to promote new talent, particularly that one song, “Oh Sheila”, you know, “Let me love you til the morning comes”. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s really a fun, exciting Kung Fu movie, and one of the must download movies of the eighties.

The story follows a young man nicknamed “Bruce Leroy”, a Harlem martial artist who teaches Kung Fu to the local kids. He works at his father’s pizza place, delivering pies on foot and deals with his rival, Sho’Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem… Yep. Sho’Nuff… The Shogun of Harlem. This incredibly goofy martial arts tale takes place on the real streets of modern day Harlem and creates a really quirky, one of a kind movie.

Sho’Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, is really a cinematic treasure as far as great film characters go. He tries to egg Bruce Leroy into a fight so that he can prove, once and for all, who the strongest fighter in the city is. Every time he steps on scene, it’s with a short speech, aided by his lackeys. “Am I the prettiest?!” “SHO NUFF!” “Am I the baddest?!” “SHO NUFF!” “Am I the meanest, leanest mofo around dis town?!” “SHO NUFF!” “SHO’NUFF! Da Shogun of Harlem!” He wears visor sunglasses, a samurai’s hakama (those baggy pants that disguise foot movement), and shoulder pads, as well as a top knot… He looks ridiculous and he’s just a joy to behold.

If there’s one downside to the movie, it’s the whole subplot about the Cyndi Lauper wannabe singer and her promoter/boyfriend. He’s trying to play hardball in order to get her played on the local music show, and… Well, it’s just not really the high point of the movie. It’s not too much of a distraction, but you’ll find yourself wishing they’d just get back to the kung fu already.

And of course, it does pay off in the end when the manager hires all the baddest dudes in the city to have it out with Bruce Leroy and his students. These “bad dudes” include a big fat old white guy with a Mister T Mohawk and an all gold one piece suit… Yep, real bad dudes, these guys.

Besides the action and jokes, there are also some classic eighties scenes that you couldn’t see in any other era, such as Leroy trying to find the man who writes the wise sayings on fortune cookies, only to find that the whole process is automated by a computer that prints them out.

Could the movie have been a bit better without the subplot about the record promoter and his girlfriend? Sure, but there’s always something about every movie where it “could have been better”. Regardless, what’s there is a fun, funny, corny, exciting little gem of a film. Half kung fu, half spoof of kung fu, and all eighties.

Takeshi Kitano is one of the most fascinating characters on the modern cinematic landscape. He has always been creating interesting movies, but at the beginning of his career, he was in danger of being stuck in a rut of only creating violent crime films. This is perhaps due to the fact that his debut directorial effort was really… Well, a violent crime film, Violent Cop. Kikujiro is really a step outside of the norm for Kitano. It’s sweet, touching and sentimental, where his movies are typically much more cold and hard, defined by their violent content. Kitano’s career has had a lot of twists and turns. He began as an emcee of a nightclub. When the comedian there got sick, he took over as comic for the night, and he was a huge star on the comedy scene for a number of years.

He went on to become a popular TV host, and this got him another job as a video game designer. He created a game called Takeshi’s Challenge for the NES. The game began with a title card reading “WARNING: This game was created by a man who hates video games.” We don’t know if he hates video games, but this game hated the player. It included challenges such as holding a single button for several hours straight, a horizontal scrolling shooting game where you cannot hit the up button, so you can only dodge enemies by moving down, and a last boss who took more than one hundred thousand hits to kill.

Kitano’s strange sense of humor really comes through in everything he does, and Kikujiro is no exception. The film follows an old man, played by Kitano, and a young boy as they journey across the country to find the boy’s mother. Along the way, the old man spends all their money on gambling, thinking that the kid can predict the winning horse after a lucky streak.

So Kitano is then forced to beg for food, scoring two sandwiches, and eating his own out of the boy’s sight so he can pretend that he’s doing without for the child’s sake. This is a very sweet moment, with Kikujiro showing that he’s not above lying to try and earn the boy’s respect and affection.

The movie is incredibly touching, with one of the best scenes being a dream sequence wherein the child recalls all the fun he’s had with Kikujiro and their friends. It’s about family, and how each group of people will define that word for themselves, outside of societal norms.

It is, certainly, one of Kitano’s best. Sonatine is the film he’s really known for in the US, but Kikujiro is one of his many crowning achievements.

Ricky-Oh, The Story Of Ricky, is without a doubt one of the strangest, weirdest and most surreal films ever created. It is really just plain nuts. It’s hard to believe that some crazy filmmakers even went out there with this idea and said “Yeah let’s make this movie instead of just joking around about it!” It was based on the equally surreal comic book by the same title. The resulting movie belongs on the list of top cult download internet movies. It’s funny, surprising, shocking and ridiculous, and whether or not you wind up enjoying it, you’ll certainly never forget it.

The movie focuses on the title character, Ricky-Oh, a young martial artist who gets himself put in prison for… Some reason or other (the movie is kind of vague on this point, as well as many others). Within the prison walls, he must face the members and leaders of four gangs that run the inmates, each one the master of their own strange style of Kung Fu.

The movie is nothing if not violent, but the violence is so absurd that it’s not really offensive or disturbing so much as it is funny and weird. It reaches Loony Toons proportions. In one fight scene, a badguy rips out his own intestine to strangle Ricky with, immediately after Ricky, having received a slash across a major artery, pulls the vein out and ties it in a knot.

You’ll really be too busy laughing at the onscreen violence to even other being disturbed, so you can’t quite say that it’s “not for the easily nauseated”, because it’s just too darn Loony Toons to gross you out.

A later fight scene has a villain transforming into a giant monster. By giant monster, we really mean “A stuntman in a really, really, really bad costume”. You can practically see the zipper on the back of this thing. In another movie, the fakeness of the special effects might have been a problem. In Ricky-Oh, it’s a big part of the charm.

The story actually, surprisingly, has a heart under all this surreal violence. The real story of the film revolves around Ricky trying to fight for freedom and dignity for all of his fellow inmates, who are constantly harassed and bullied by the warden and his spoiled rotten man-child son. It’s about humanity, empathy and understanding more so than it is about violence.

But in the end, the real appeal is the strangeness of it, the bizarre violence, just how far over the top it goes. It doesn’t go too far, it goes way past “too far”, it boards a shuttle and flies off planet from “way too far”. In the end, this is why the movie is a cult legend in the pantheon of strange action films.

And yet, the ending is somehow upbeat and optimistic. It’s weird, fun, funny, the violence only ever feels silly, not truly violent, and the result is an all time classic of weird action.

With films like Clockers and He Got Game, Spike Lee took the gritty, urban setting and used it as a background for stories about family problems. The lead character is named Jesus. Jee-Zuss, not Hey-Seuss. It’s… It’s a Biblical name, you could say. Jesus is a basketball prodigy, one of the most promising the city has ever seen. His father is played by Denzel Washington, serving a stint in prison for involuntary manslaughter. During a domestic altercation some years ago, he accidentally killed Jesus’ mother, shoving her. She slipped and broke her neck. Jesus has never forgiven him for this, although his little sister has. These family issues come up again throughout the film.

The warden at the prison offers a deal: Let the father out for a little while to convince Jesus to join the warden’s alma mater, and they’ll see about reducing the sentence.

Of course, this isn’t really the point for the father. A reduced sentence is a nice bonus, but he really wants to take the opportunity to find the son’s forgiveness, to be close to him and to love him and be loved by him. The way these two plot threads tie together is really incredible, in that what school Jesus chooses has to be right for him.

The father also falls in love with a prostitute and tries to spend as much time as he can with her while they’re letting him walk the streets free. The son must maintain his righteousness, choosing a school for the right reasons no matter what sort of bribes and incentives they dangle in front of him like carrots on sticks. Money, sex, drugs, or his father’s love, are the prizes at stake. It’s a story of forgiveness and temptation for both of the leads.
